ZX-5 Full Review

The Bros have tried out a few paddles over the last few years, and we have played with most of the Spinergy paddles. We even reviewed the Spinergy ZX-1 and ZX-3 which were aimed at Pickleball beginners. And we recently reviewed the ultra premium Spinergy ZX-9, for more advanced players.

The ZX-5 sits between those paddles as it is designed for more intermediate players. We have enjoyed to playing with the Spinergy paddles, and we continue to play with them to this day. So we knew what to expect from the ZX-5, and it’s no surprise that we really liked the paddle.

Let’s dig into the ZX-5.

Spinergy ZX-5: Paddle Specs

The ZX-5 is similar in size, weight and pickleball paddle material to the ZX-3, with the main difference being the hot carbon press method of paddle production. This advanced method of production provides more power and control when compared to other paddles.

The ZX-5 has a great design, with colors that pop and look cool on the court

First Impressions: Look and Feel

Just like it’s Spinergy brothers and sisters, the ZX-5 is a slick paddle. The paddle design is sweet, and it pops with primary colors on a black matte face. The paddle looks great and feels great in your hand.

The shape of the paddle is similar to the ZX-3. The classic paddle shape works and feels great when taking a few practice swings.

The ZX-5 also uses a padded, but sturdy grip technology. The Spinergy paddles always have a nice, comfortable feel in your hands. The cushioning is soft and comes in at 11.5 cms, which is an ideal grip size for most players. And the paddle weight is standard for an intermediate paddle, not too heavy or too light.

Straight out of the box, the spinergy paddles do not disappoint. Paddle images online don’t do the paddle justice, as the colors are subtle and the details are hard to capture. We hope the snaps above give an accurate representation of the paddle when viewed in your hand.

First Impressions: On the Court

The ZX-5 is a fun paddle to play with. The Bros all played with the paddle. And despite our differences in pickleball expertise, it was a great paddle to play with.

The paddle is aimed at intermediate players and beginners that want a more advanced paddle. So the paddle is versatile, and it can be played with any experience level. The ZX-5 is similar to the other Spinergy paddles. However, the feel of extra power was evident when smacking the big hits.

John, our resident tennis/pickleball player went to work with his pickleball SMASH hits and enjoyed the power he could produce. And Mark, the Pickleball rookie, could also peel out a few big shots. We wanted power and that was what we got, so that was great.

We also liked the feel while dropping and dinking at the net. The ZX-5 has a nice ability for those specialised soft touch shots. It really is a great all round paddle, and where the bros all differ in pickleball ability, we all enjoyed the paddle and thought it was great for our specialised playing styles and abilities.

Great detail on the super comfortable ZX-5 handle

Spinergy ZX-5: Detailed Impressions

The Bros played with the ZX-5 for an extended period of time. It continues to be a great power paddle after multiple pickleball sessions. It’s a real easy, pick up and play paddle that has subtle differences to the other Spinergy paddles.

The ZX-5 sits in our “ideal for intermediate” players range, based on the paddle core thickness and the paddle weight. A paddle in this range gives you more power and control and increased consistency. And it is adaptable to skill levels. This means that although intermediates players will appreciate the paddle for all-round play, beginners could also grow into the paddle.

Expert players will appreciate this paddle, but they should probably lean towards the ZX-9. may lean towards the raw-carbon goodness of the Spinergy ZX-9. Which we also loved by the way.

The ZX-5 has a vibrant, primary color pop with a fantastic feel for beginners and intermediate players. It comes at a great price and this jack-of-all-trades paddle remains a favourite for the Bros. Be sure to check it out.
