Play Pickleball and Be Merry: A Chat With Obelisk Pickleball

Vinh Truong is more than a Pickleball enthusiast. And his paddle company, Obelisk Pickleball does a lot more than just make paddles. Known for their great paddles that are used by players across Australia, Obelisk also plays an important part in the Pickleball community. The story of Obelisk Pickleball is fantastic but not well known.

We sat sat down with the founder of Obelisk Pickleball, Vinh Truong to learn about the brands origin, design philosophy and his tireless work within the Pickleball community.

What inspired you to start Obelisk Pickleball, and how did you come up with the name?

In early 2020 I noticed there weren’t many paddles available for Australian players. Obelisk Pickleball was established in Brisbane soon after. And we created our own USAPA approved paddles.

The name Obelisk came from an ancient time, where an Obelisk is a monument land mark where people get together and pray to the sun god. For Obelisk Pickleball, it symbolises a place where people get together for a common purpose… to play pickleball and be merry.

Obelisk has been making paddles for a few years. Can you tell me about the history of the brand?

Obelisk Pickleball was established in early 2020. At the time, pickleball paddles were not easily available for new players. The paddles were not USAPA approved. And they were limited in quality and local availability.

In August 2022, Obelisk Pickleball designed and engineered their first two pickleball paddles. The Obelisk Argyle and the Obelisk Vindicator landed in Australia. These paddles were made to perfection for Australian Pickleball players.

Fast forward to 2024, we continue to design and develop high performance paddles and accessories for all players. Experts, Beginners and children. Obelisk Pickleball can help any player find the perfect paddle.

How Do you see the Pickleball Community Evolving? And What role does Obelisk hope to play in that growth?

Obelisk Pickleball has a grass roots approach to Pickleball. We help clubs get started by loaning equipment, painting lines and volunteering time. We have helped open more than 10 Pickleball venues throughout Brisbane and Queensland. And we intend to open many more.

So far, Obelisk Pickleball has helped McGregor State School, Wynnum High School and many more. And we continue to help new venues get started around Australia.

That is interesting, can you tell Us More about How you support the Pickleball Community

In 2024, Obelisk Pickleball started a new initiative to further support Pickleball in Australia. Obelisk Pickleball now provides equipment sponsorship for players and community groups. Players are selected based on their sportsmanship. And on their contributions to the pickleball community.

Obelisk Pickleball are proud to share a percentage of their profits on every sale. These profits go back into the Pickleball community. We also discount and donate pickleball equipment to communities, schools and church groups. We want to help groups that need support to get started to play pickleball.

And on a personal note, I was voted the Pickleball Volunteer of the year in 2023 by the Queensland Pickleball Association.

Looking at your Obelisk Paddles, how do you come up with the designs? Is there a certain look or feel you are going for?

Our Paddles were originally just simply based on aesthetics and simple designs. We have recently partnered with a graphic designer. And we are revamping our paddles. It is an exciting time at Obelisk Pickleball. We have new paddles pending USAPA approval with new paddle technologies and a new look.
